Roller Coaster ride for the Economy

Festival time is round the corner and companies are waiting with bated breath will the consumers open their wallets to dispel the gloom in the economy? Economic growth is at a 10-year low and the monthly data is still not giving comfort. The optimism for improved growth is being touted despite the falling capital expenditure, stubbornly high inflation, weaker rupee that is putting pressure on the current account deficit. But all may not be gloom for the economy. Cumulative rainfall during July-August in the current year has been 11 per cent higher than the all India average. Three of the four regions, as classified by the Met department, have received higher than normal rains. That has helped in a 6.8 per cent higher area for sowing of kharif crops. A bumper crop could help check food inflation and drive money into rural hands that could in turn be used to buy products like tractors, bikes and even more products like shampoo, soap some discretionary products.

Union Budget 2013

Budget had traditionally been once-in-a-year monolog that raised high pitch decibel for a short time before the country went back to its as-usual business. Seldom has a budget been as eagerly awaited as the budget for 2013-14 was. For once, the country was waiting for governance to deliver at least rhetorically. India has a tough choice to make, considering the sloth handling of the economy in the past few years. Little focus on creating long term value coupled with unproductive spending frenzy has forced the once lauded India economy into a pity state. Inflation unabated, low growth regime strongly points that the economy is entering stagflation which could potentially make the wealth created by the country so far disappear much faster than most of us can estimate. The Finance Minister, undoubtedly, has a tough choice.

The year gone by : an update

The 'The Great Indian Growth story', 'India Shining', are these rhapsodic rants anywhere close to what transpired in early nineties and dawned upon the whole world, where the Indian economy exuded great confidence and India Inc grew stronger and went into new geographies looking for opportunities. Economic liberalization, including industrial deregulation, privatization of state-owned enterprises, and reduced controls on foreign trade and investment, began in the early 1990s and served to accelerate the country's growth, which has averaged more than 7% per year since 1997. But the sheen has dimmed somewhat in the past two years as GDP (Gross Domestic Product) growth slowed, and international realities started biting. More recently, gloom and doom conversations abound and there is concern around the growth in economy being stalled due political, economical and geographical factors. It is almost like an unbound pessimism has replaced the earlier irrational exuberance which made India another emerging power to reckon with in Asia and towed it on the same line as China and Japan.
